Jeff was in town for his solo show “Life Cycle” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery and in the video talks about his background, his creative process behind the show, as well as some of his future plans.

“Rolling around town throwing up some posters was a nice ease into the city, a few disapproving frowns and harsh spoken Spanish words fell upon these deaf English ears and I blindly carried on… sometimes it’s good to not be able to translate… not often, but sometimes… late in the evening I stumbled upon this spot, bang in the center of the city and with a ton of passing traffic, Uri bowled in and managed to sweet talk the security guard ($5 helps) into letting me hit it and even lent me the heaviest ladder (made from 2 small trees) i’ve ever seen or used… we went back the next day and finished up only to be met by the owner… ohhhhhhhh shit… oh wait, he’s smiling… he shook our hands like we’d just married his daughter… well if we married his daughter he’d probably be taking shots at us… but either way he was happy… stay tuned or tune out for the next ‘thrilling’ installment… ”

I’m privileged to get invited to travel the world with my artwork, i’ve met and hung with some amazing people, so when I got invited to participate in the ‘9th Festival Arte en la Calle’ Quito, Ecuador, it seemed a hell of a far off destination to hit, added to the complications of the language barrier, what I was expected to do in Quito when I arrived was vague, ‘paint a car’ was as much as I knew, so I packed heavily and went as prepared as the best Scout could do. I boarded the first of 4 flights to Ecuador, half expecting to arrive in Quito and be bundled into the back of a car in some elaborate kidnap or smuggler mule plan… I couldn’t have been more wrong… I was greeted by smiling faces and warm hearts… not to mention the most amazing scenery… a sprawling city nestled in the belly of a valley shadowed by snow caped mountains and volcanoes… and the thinest, most polluted air my lungs have ever breathed…

4 days to get busy in the city… and on the 5th day live paint a car at the Festival in front of a sprawling crowd… great that bit I lost in translation… still in a city where the cops can be bribed with $20 and it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, every wall became fair game… oh and it helps hugely if you have a brother in tow who not only speaks Spanish but has a charm not even the law can avoid… massive shout to Uri… or NY*Face as he’s known… more, much more to follow.

New York’s Faro has just put out his first zine. It’s a 24 page overview of Faro’s drawings and graffiti in black and white. Faro is one of New York’s up and coming graffiti/street artists, so who knows, maybe this zine will be a collectible one day like Neckface’s book Satan’s Bride. But more importantly, it looks like it’s full of fun content and plenty of Faro’s trademark mummies.

This car is a reflection of the idea that art should not only be designated to areas like galleries and studios. The artwork has several themes including Pac-Man, Where’s Waldo, Space Invaders, Tetris, Mario and others, all weaved together in a comprehensive abstraction. The vehicle was stripped of its clear coat, brought into my studio and for the next 160 hours (11 days total), it was drawn on with paint pens by artist Ted Mikulski. The clear coat was put back on and it is now sealed as a permanent piece of art. The work was unveiled at the New Britain Museum of American Art in July of 2010. It is no longer a car.

The Facadeprinter is a simple, software controlled robot. It consits of a two axis turn table and an airpressure printhead. The printer shoots the artwork from a distanced position dot by dot onto the chosen area. Using this method, inaccessible and also uneven surfaces can be printed on. Buildings can be displayed without costly scaffolding.

The Facadeprinter is a large scale communication tool. Print-aesthetics and method are distinguishly different from conventional print- and advertising techniques. Artworks are applied directly onto walls, like the drawings of a ‘magic pen’. At present, the maximum print distance is 12 meters, the maximum print height is around 8 meters. The shooting frequency is up to 5 dots per second.

The printer is equipped with an industrial PC which is running the specially programmed printing software. The machine is operated by touchscreen. Artworks can be loaded from USB-devices in the file format SVG. With an integrated camera photos of the printing area can be taken and overlayered with a printing preview. This way position and scaling can be adjusted optimally on site. The distance to the wall is measured by infrared-meter and entered manually. The printing software calculates the driving coordinates regarding both the perspective and the ballistic distortion.

A paintball system was converted into a printhead to shoot the colour balls onto the wall. The two axis turn table places the paintball marker by steppermotors and gears. Before printing an integrated laser displays a bounding box of the artwork to verify the precise position on the wall. In case of malfunction or danger printing can be paused anytime.

A balltower conveys the gelatine encapsulated colour balls to the marker. Here they are accelerated to a speed of 200km/h and finally burst on contact with the wall, leaving their coloured contents. A colour dot of 5 to 10 cm diameter occurs on the wall. The busted gelatine shell falls down to the ground where it can be removed, or left to decompose naturally by the rain without residue. The colour qualities differ from each other gravely considering UV stability or dripping characteristics. So colours can be chosen which bleach out within a few hours or remains visible for several months.

“If you’re heading to San Diego for the “Viva la Revolucion” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego (from July 17th) be sure to take the “Space Invader Walk” around the city and find the 21 space invaders that Invader placed in in Downtown San Diego.

As you can see the photo above, the tiles were placed in the city to create a huge space invader on the map.”
